GLP-1 Therapy: More Than Weight Loss

Table of Contents

What are GLP-1 medications? GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally produced in the body after we eat. GLP-1 plays an important role in regulating appetite, blood sugar, digestion, and feelings of fullness. GLP-1 medications work by mimicking or enhancing these natural hormone signals.

These medications were originally developed to help manage type 2 diabetes, but researchers discovered that they can also produce significant weight loss and provide other metabolic and cardiovascular benefits. Today, several medications in this family are used for chronic weight management in appropriate patients.

How do GLP-1 medications work?

GLP-1 medications can work in several ways:

• Reduce hunger and appetite by acting on areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation.
• Increase feelings of fullness and satiety, which may make it easier to eat appropriate portions.
• Slow stomach emptying, which can help you feel full longer after eating.
• Improve blood sugar regulation by enhancing insulin release when blood glucose is elevated and reducing inappropriate glucagon secretion.
• Support metabolic health by helping improve several factors associated with overweight, obesity, and insulin resistance.

Weight Management

One of the most recognized benefits of GLP-1 therapy is its ability to support meaningful weight loss. For many people, weight management can be extremely difficult despite making changes to diet and exercise. GLP-1 medications can be used as part of a comprehensive weightmanagement plan to help reduce appetite and support long-term lifestyle changes.

Even modest weight loss can have meaningful health benefits. Losing approximately 5–10% of starting body weight may improve blood sugar, blood pressure, triglycerides, and other conditions associated with excess weight.

Importantly, medication is not a replacement for healthy nutrition or physical activity. GLP-1 therapy tends to work best when combined with sustainable nutrition, exercise, sleep, and behavioral changes.

Heart & Cardiovascular Health

The benefits of GLP-1 therapy may extend beyond weight loss. Certain GLP-1 medications have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits in specific patient populations.

For example, the FDA approved Semaglutide (Wegovy) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke in adults with established cardiovascular disease who also have overweight or obesity. In the large clinical trial supporting this indication, major cardiovascular events occurred less frequently among patients receiving Semaglutide than those receiving placebo.

Weight reduction itself may also contribute to improvements in cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides.

Inflammation & Metabolic Health

Chronic, low-grade inflammation is commonly associated with obesity and metabolic dysfunction. Research has found that GLP-1-based therapies can be associated with reductions in certain inflammatory markers.

While researchers are still studying exactly how these medications influence inflammation, their effects on weight, glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers may contribute to broader improvements in metabolic health. It is important to understand that GLP1 medications should not be considered an anti-inflammatory medication in the traditional sense; rather, reduced inflammation may be one component of their overall metabolic effects.
